ABC to read strives to help combat social inequalities in our local community by ensuring all children grow up in a positive and ambitious environment, where everyone has a fair chance of achieving, becoming skilled learners and valuing themselves and others . . . ABC to read's purpose is to advance the education and self-confidence of primary school children in Berkshire, by helping them to overcome reading difficulties, giving them a skill for life and thereby promoting their general well-being. ABC to read strives to help combat social inequalities in our local community by ensuring all children grow up in a positive and ambitious environment, where everyone has a fair chance of achieving, becoming skilled learners and valuing themselves and others. To do this, we recruit, train and support community volunteers to provide one-to-one mentoring of primary school children who are struggling to read. We currently have around 120 volunteers in over 70 schools in Berkshire working with children who are not entitled to individual help through statutory funding. We are working in around 20 primary schools in Reading. We believe that children who have poor reading skills benefit enormously from individual attention, whether this is from a mentor or parent, who can give encouragement and make reading fun.
