ADAPT Prembabies is a small Leicestershire charity which provides support to parents and families of premature and poorly babies needing specialist neonatal care whilst in the hospital and when the babies go home. . . . ADAPT provides support for families of premature and poorly babies on the neonatal units at Leicester Royal Infirmary and Leicester General Hospital and after they go home. When a baby is admitted into a neonatal unit the emotional stress and trauma for parents is immense – having a baby should be a happy time but these parents are terrified, guilty, feel helpless and are grieving the premature end to their pregnancy. We support these parents through the worst time of their lives not knowing from day to day, hour to hour what the outcome will be. Our support happens in lots of ways, we listen, we cry, we laugh with parents but most of all we are there to help them through the good and bad days, we bridge the gaps between medical staff, family and friends to ensure parents psychological needs are met. Many mums at this time have an increased risk of developing depression, anxiety and postnatal post-traumatic stress disorder and our Family Support Worker is trained to look for these signs and to refer for specialist medical help.
