Action For Elders Trust aims to co-create a world where older people are placed at the heart of the community getting the support they deserve to live a happier and healthier later life. Formed as a result of a research and development partnership with Sheffield University, we successfully piloted a number of our Social and Economy Pathway programmes called ‘Balanced Lives’ across England and Wales. This evidenced based programme tackles the major health and social problems associated with ageing: decreased mobility and loneliness. It is delivered weekly by trained staff at a number of community centres and care homes. Our focus on the specific health challenges of ageing and the results we achieve are what makes us unlike other providers - and the feedback we get from older people is excellent. In 2013, the Big Lottery Well Being Report identified the key factors for success in increasing well being for older people: empathetic staff, holistic approach, suitable venue, programme flexibility, sustaining engagement, volunteers, identifying local need, imparting skills and knowledge, training, co-production, engaging the target group and enabling progress to be measured. Balanced Lives ticks all of these boxes. In Balanced Lives we monitor vital health signs such as blood pressure, help people to improve their mobility, and assist them with techniques to prevent falls and injuries. We believe it’s never too late to learn new life skills and teach new activities or reminiscence through life story work and memory boards. We do all this in a pleasant, stimulating and sociable environment. We know that we help people to develop a positive attitude to their circumstances, cope better with life and - very importantly - make them feel they are still of value. Our unique emphasis on good health and social interaction is delivered through our use of relationship centered practices such as The Senses Framework. We aim to reduce older people’s hospital admissions and GP visits by improving mobility and lessening falls. We wish to enhance health prevention and educate older people to take more control over their health and well being. We also promote a sense of purpose, worth and achievement that creates independence and adds value and enjoyment to later lives. To date we have helped the health and social welfare of more than 500 older people across England and Wales With your support we can help many more.
