The Children’s Hospital Trust is an independent non-profit organisation and fundraiser for the world-famous Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital and Child Healthcare in the Western Cape. Although the hospital is based in Cape Town, it serves children from all over South Africa and Africa treating the sickest of the sick children who need expert medical care. IMPACTING CHILD HEALTHCARE IN AFRICA The Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital in Cape Town, South Africa, is largest dedicated, tertiary children’s hospital south of Cairo and provides world-class childcare to thousands of children from all over Africa. Not only does the Hospital provide specialised paediatric care to seriously ill children, but also undertakes high level medical training both locally and internationally, and conducts ground-breaking research into childhood illnesses which has global influence. It is also an academic hospital, being part of the University of Cape Town’s Institute of Child Health. The Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital’s stature far outweighs its 260 000 annual patient visits. Built nearly 60 years ago, the Hospital provides a critical service to children who are largely from poor and marginalised communities and a third of these sick children are under a year old. The Need Patients include the sickest of sick children; children who, almost without exception need highly complex medical interventions to recover. While the South African Government pays for the annual operational costs of the hospital, funds available for upgrading buildings and purchasing of equipment are very restricted. In contrast to similar hospitals in the UK, the Red Cross Children’s Hospital works on a fraction of the budget and treats on average 50% more children with equally rare and complex diseases. Although there is a much smaller budget, there are no compromises – it is still a world-leading specialist paediatric place of healing underpinned by a philosophy that no child be turned away.
